Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to become creative and inspired by art. DuVernay worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she required during the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art was a vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and showed her how she could use the arts to find a way to express herself. Though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she always spent summers with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to direct a movie that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity sector. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
